Using Google Adsense for Search in WordPress

I wanted to use Google “AdSense for Search” as the default search engine on my wordpress site. After experimenting with several of the wordpress plugins to set up the Google Search, I just wasn’t satisfied with any of them. So I asked myself: “Why couldn’t I do something like I’d been doing with plain old websites”? It turns out that I could and I ended up with something that seems pretty simple, to me.

Application software and license procurement can become the “long-pole-in-tent” in production deployments with server virtualization using VMWare, XEN or HYPER-V

At my company we’ve been using server virtualization with VMWare products for 2-3 years. During that time we’ve created processes and procedures that allow us to deploy a server and its supporting operating system in as little as a few minutes. My reading suggests it is the same with the Hyper-V and XEN virtualization products as well.

Unfortunately, obtaining software licenses for the applications that we run on these servers can and does still take many weeks.  The procurement process remains basically unchanged.

Although we’ve been taking this into account and It may be obvious to many others, you’ll want to be sure that you take the software and license procurement time into account when establishing project plans.

As an aside, we have one “well-known” vendor that keeps sending us 90-day temporary licenses for a product that is paid for and the check has cleared the bank.

Adding SSL support to an existing WSS 3.0 (SharePoint 2007) site

I developed and configured a WSS 3.0 (Sharepoint 2007) Team discussion site. My initial goal was to compare the capabilities of WSS 3.0 to host forum-like discussions. After I had a firmer grasp of the capabilities of SharePoint 2007 with respect to hosting discussions and AAA security ( Authentication, Authorization and Accounting); I wanted to support SSL. As you might guess, this involved more than simply installing an SSL certificate on my IIS website

Creating navigation links within a SharePoint 2007 or WSS 3.0 wiki page

I’m always hearing complaints about how deficient the SharePoint 2007 Wiki editor is. Although SharePoint 2007 is the 3rd release of the SharePoint product, some components are in their 1st release. The Wiki editor is one of these 1st release components.

One of the things people want to do is easily create inter-page navigation links like, top, bottom, etc. Although not the most user friendly approach, you can do this manually by entering anchors from the source view of the Wiki Editor. Here’s how I do it.

Tracking VMWare ESX 3.x or ESXi Host resources with Cacti

I’ve been using Cacti,  RRDTool, SNMP and custom scripts running on Linux for several years to collect and display historical data regarding Network, System, and FlexLM license resource usage. I recently began tracking the Host resources used by ESX.  I was interested in tracking the following:

  • CPU utilization
  • Memory Free
  • Total Memory
  • IO activity
  • Network traffic
